In general, BMI of <18.5 indicates underweight; 18.6 to 24.9 is normal; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; 30 to 34.9 is mild to moderate obesity; 35 to 39.9 is moderate to severe obesity; 40 and above is extreme obesity. But, for age 60 and over:,normal is up to 26-27, and the overweight category is 27.1 to 31.9. The BMI may overstate overweight for those with big bones or those who are heavily muscled.
