TESTS NOT INCLUDED
AS ROUTINE PART OF COMPREHENSIVE PREVENTION
EXAMINATION
General comprehensive physical examination
Not shown to be beneficial. Normally
a waste of money. We do a limited physical examination (skin, mouth,
breast), plus whatever is indicated because of symptoms and complaints.
Chest x-ray
No evidence annual or routine chest
x-rays change the course of any disease. Being re-evaluated for
lung cancer, but no evidence so far.
Electrocardiogram
Not useful for detecting coronary heart
disease. We focus on coronary heart disease risk factors (blood
pressure, cholesterol, weight, smoking). Can justify exercise cardiogram
before starting an exercise program.
White blood cell count
Not useful in healthy persons.
Urinalysis
Only for pregnant women. Not helpful
in people with no symptoms.
Chemical screen (blood tests for calcium,
urea, liver function, etc
Not shown to make a difference in persons
with no symptoms. Too many false positives.
Routine pelvic examination
We do PAP smears. Thus far, there is
no evidence that a pelvic examination in a woman with no symptoms
changes the course of any disease, including ovarian cancer.
Digital rectal examination
Not needed in asymptomatic persons.
We screen for bowel cancer with other tests. Does not change course
of prostate cancer.
Prostate blood test (PSA)
We will not include until there is
clear evidence that the test saves lives or significantly prolongs
good quality life. (The Healthful Life newsletter will have details
on this).
Screening for overactive or underactive
thyroid
Under consideration. The issue is how
important value in a person with no symptoms.
Depression screening
See newsletters. Included in Healthful
Life Program, not yet in Health Wellness Promotion Act.
